Bamboo - A grass that grows like a weed and can be made into rayon.  No third-party certification exists to
ensure that farming it doesn't pollute or require deforestation.
Biodegradable - capable of decaying through the action of living organisms, especially bacteria.
Bluesign - A European standard certification of a material or process as eco-friendly, accounting for such
factors as air and water emmissions, and resource management.
Biomass - Biomass is any organic material made from plants or animals. Domestic biomass resources
include agricultural and forestry residues, municipal solid wastes, industrial wastes, and terrestrial and
aquatic crops grown solely for energy purposes.
Blackwater - wastewater containing bodily or other biological wastes, as from toilets, dishwashers, or
kitchen drains.
Certified Organic - produced according to the National Organic Program's rule and is in compliance with
the ruling of an independent. USDA-accredited certifier.  Will have USDA seal.
Cloud Forest - a tropical forest, often near peaks of coastal mountains, that usually have constant cloud
cover throughout the year.
Cob - a mixture of clay and straw, used as a building material; a round mass or lump.
Cocona - By-product of discarded coconut shells that's converted and infused into cotton and synthetic
fabrics.
Community Support Agriculture (CSA) - a way for the food buying public to create a relationship with a
farm and to receive a weekly basket of produce. Consists of a community of individuals who pledge
support to a farm operation, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the
risks and benefits of food production.  By making a financial commitment to a farm, people become
"members" (or "shareholders," or "subscribers") of the CSA.
Composting - a natural process during which bacteria and other living organisms break down
compostable waste into humus - a soil-like material that enriches lawn and garden fertility and slows soil
erosion.
Environmentally friendly - (eco-friendly and nature friendly) are synonyms used to refer to goods and
services considered to inflict minimal or no harm on the environment.[1] To make consumers aware,
environmentally friendly goods and services often are marked with eco-labels. But because there is no
single international standard for this concept, the International Organization for Standardization considers
such labels too vague to be meaningful
Fair Trade - trade that satisfies certain criteria on the supply chain of the goods involved, usually including
fair payment for producers; often with other social and environmental conditions.
Fjord - along, narrow arm of the sea bordered by sea cliffs: usually formed by glacial erosion.
Free-Range - usually applied to poultry, meaning any livestock raised with unlimited outdoor access.
Green Building - the practice of increasing the efficiency of buildings and their use of energy, water,
materials, and reducing impacts on human health and the environment through better location, design,
construction, operation, maintenance, and removal.
Greywater - wastewater from household baths and washing machines that is recycled, especially for use
in gardening or flushing toilets.
ISO 14000 - A three-part environmental management protocol that evaluates and reports on a companny's
greenhouse emissions.
Kinetic Energy - the energy possessed by a body because of its motion, equal to one half the mass of the
body times the square of its speed.
LEED - A certification that is awarded to companies that show leadership in energy and environmental
design.
Natural - product contains no artificial ingredients or added colors and is minimally processed.
Permaculture - a system of cultivation intended to maintain permanent agriculture or horticulture by relying
on renewable resources and a self-sustaining ecosystem.
PET (polyethlyne terephthalate) - a polyester whose properties allow it to be recycled; soda bottles are a
common recycled item.
Photovoltaic - capable of producing a voltage when exposed to radiant energy, especially light.
Solar Power - energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electric energy.
Soil Conservation - the protection of the soil by careful management, to prevent physical loss by erosion
and to avoid chemical deterioration.  To maintain soil fertility.
Sustainability - capable of being contained with minimal long-term effect on the environment.
Wind Power - the conversion of wind energy into a useful form, sch as electricity using wind turbines.
Wind Turbine - a machine that converts the kinetic energy in wind into mechanical energy.
